Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU Review

Gaming laptops have the reputation of being large and unwieldy machines that simply can not be transported to and from work or school every day; or at least they should not. However, I really admire Asus for its series of ROG Zephyrus gaming notebooks that offer high-end games on machines that do not look out of place in a game-free environment. Then, when Asus sent us the Zephyrus M GU502GU (Rs.149,990) to us, I was excited to see what Asus had accomplished with this Zephyrus laptop. I have been using this laptop for more than a week, and this is my in-depth review of the Zephyrus M GU502GU gaming laptop.

Now that the specifications are out of the way, let's take a closer look at the Zephyrus M GU502GU.

Design and construction

As I mentioned earlier, I really admire Asus' line of Zephyrus laptops for providing great game power in sleek design, and the Zephyrus M GU502 is no different. It comes in an impressive-looking chassis with a metal cover on the lid, a soft-touch material that surrounds the keyboard and covers the palm rest, and a large selection of ports that complete the look of the laptop.

There is a ROG logo on the cap that glows red and looks good on the brushed metal finish. Inside, the screen is surrounded by fine bevels, which gives the laptop a modern look, with the exception of the giant lower bezel containing the subtly-made "ROG Zephyrus" trademark, and a large label showing the credentials and specifications from the screen. What I hate I do not like stickers on laptops as a general rule, and this one also looks ugly; But I suppose you could eliminate it if you wanted.

One problem here is that the Zephyrus M GU502 does not come with a webcam, and although that is not a decisive factor for me, since I never use the webcam, it could be a deciding factor for some of you.

Then there's the keyboard and the finishing around it. This area provides a very nice rubbery feel that is simply the perfect amount of grip and satisfactorily soft to the touch to ensure that I am comfortable using this laptop for hours on end. Also, I guess this would also make it easier to keep my palms on the laptop during the winters, when my MacBook Pro gets so cold it's awkward to type.

In general, the ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU is a well-designed and well-built laptop, and so far I have no complaints. In fact, I really like the design and construction of this laptop.

Screen

The Zephyrus M GU502 ROG comes with a 15.6-inch FullHD IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate and a response time of 3 ms, both important numbers for players. Thanks to the high refresh rate, things look very good on the Zephyrus M. Even outside games, general animations, scrolling, everything looks great on this screen and I liked it a lot. It is possible that the response time of 3 ms is not so important for regular users, but for the players it is a good response time.

In addition to those two things, the screen is wonderful in almost every other aspect as well. It is large and has a lot of real estate screen to multitask with ease. It was validated in Pantone, which translates into excellent color reproduction across the board, so watching movies and TV shows and playing on this screen is a wonderful experience.

The only place where I have a complaint with the screen is the brightness. The brightness levels for this screen are very low, and to top it off, it comes with a matte finish that, although it helps to avoid glare, makes the screen look even less bright than you would probably do with a screen sparkly. It is decent for indoor use, but outdoor use, especially with bright sunlight is definitely a problem.

Apart from that (and kind of major problem) with the screen, the laptop does everything else wonderfully, including performance.

Performance

The Zephyrus M GU502GU comes with impressive specifications: there is a ninth Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD and an Nvidia GTX1660 Ti GPU. All that results in incredible performance.

Normal tasks are obviously nothing for this laptop. You can multitask all you want, open a load of tabs in Chrome (I was almost 20-30 open all the time) and even run a Photoshop instance at the same time, and this laptop will not do anything. . It's really great.

However, that's what you expect from a laptop that costs as much as it does, but this is a gaming laptop, so the most important metric to judge its performance is how well it handles games.

Well, I played a lot of games on the Zephyrus M GU502GU, including Unreal Tournament, Far Cry 5 and, obviously, PUBG, and the laptop handles all these games really well.

In PUBG, in the High configuration, the Zephyrus M obtained a frame rate of 85 to 100FPS easily, that would increase if you played a bit with the graphics settings, but a frame rate of 85FPS + is good enough for me, and I did not feel the need to continue advancing, especially at the expense of graphic quality.

Even Far Cry 5 performed very well on this laptop. In the Ultra graphics configuration, the laptop had an average frame rate of 66FPS, reaching 79 and 53FPS.

Changing graphics to Alta resulted in a very slight improvement in performance, with an average frame rate of 69FPS and a maximum of 80FPS.

I even tried to change the graphics to Normal just for the sake of doing it, and I got an average frame rate of 73FPS, getting as high as 85FPS and as low as 57FPS.

Clearly, the laptop can handle Far Cry 5 in the Ultra configuration with ease. I even played Far Cry 5 for a bit on the Ultra setup and it worked wonderfully, which is great.

Unreal Tournament, well, I installed the alpha version of Unreal Tournament from Epic Store because I wanted to try it, and the Zephyrus M was pushing around 75 to 80FPS in the game at all times, which is great. In addition, the game itself is also great.

If the gaming performance of this laptop was not enough for you, or if you're just looking for results from a standardized test, well, you'll be glad to know that I also got benchmarks.

In 3DMark TimeSpy, the laptop scored 5,426 points, which is quite impressive, and in PCMark 10, the Zephyrus M GU502GU scored 4,772 points.

Overall, the performance of Zephyrus M is top notch and you will not be disappointed if you are playing or taking it to work and doing office work regularly. He is a wonderful actor and I am very impressed with him.

Keyboard and trackpad

Speaking of things that impress me, let's talk about the keyboard and the trackpad here. The Zephyrus M comes with a keyboard that I can only describe as "very Asus" and I say it in a good way. Most Asus laptops have good keyboards, and this one is no different. It is not a mechanical keyboard, but it has a wide range without being too bulky, the keys are flat instead of curved, but they are still easy to play with precision and are made of high quality plastic instead of the cheap feeling that A lot of other brands use.

The design is also very good, and I love the full design of arrow keys instead of the compact design that makes it very difficult to use the arrow keys without really looking at them in the middle of a game. In addition, there are also four dedicated keys on the keyboard to increase and decrease the volume, turn off the microphone and launch the Asus ROG Armory Crate software at the touch of a button.

One additional thing that I really liked about the keyboard is that you can lock the Windows key to not open the start menu. This is really useful because I press the Windows key a lot by accident while playing and on most laptops it opens the Start menu and I end up dying in my game, and that is very annoying. In this (and probably other Asus laptops) I can simply press Fn + Windows to disable that functionality and I am very happy that this feature exists.

Anyway, from now on, there's the trackpad, and this is also amazing. The Zephyrus M comes with a decent size trackpad that is not too big, but neither is it small. In addition, it is compatible with Microsoft precision drivers, which makes its use much better and provides support for intuitive gestures that is also quite good.

I / O and ports

The Zephyrus M ROG also comes with a decent selection of ports and I / O that should be sufficient for all your needs. The laptop comes with 1 x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C DisplayPort ™ 1.4 and Power Delivery, 1 x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type A, 2 x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A, 1 x HDMI 2.0b, 1 x 3.5mm audio, 1 x Audio Jack Mic-in, and an RJ-45 Ethernet port.

In my use of this laptop, I did not feel short of ports or connectivity options, and I think you will not either. In addition, the USB-C port is definitely impressive, and with Power Delivery, you can quickly load compatible USB-PD devices, which is also great.

Audio

If there's one thing on this laptop that I did not find satisfactory, it's the audio. The laptop comes with background speakers, which is probably why the sound is insufficient, it's off and, honestly, it's not loud enough. I tried watching movies on this laptop, and it just does not cut.

As a player, I'm sure you're probably using headphones while playing, so you probably will not have to deal with this too often, but if you think you can watch movies on this laptop without a Bluetooth Speaker, or a speaker external with cable, a shock awaits you.

At a minimum, I would have expected Asus to place the speakers slightly sideways, as they did with the TUF Gaming FX505DT, but unfortunately, the Zephyrus M GU502GU is absolutely disappointed by its speakers.

Battery

Finally, there is the battery. The Zephyrus M GU502GU comes with a 76Wh battery that Asus claims lasts up to 6 hours with a charge, but the only time I noticed it happened was when I downloaded a lot of games and left the laptop to do its work while playing. Games on my PS4. Apart from that, the laptop does not last about 6 hours with a charge. I got constantly around 3 hours of battery life from this laptop.

However, if you are a player, you will most likely keep your laptop plugged in while you play, so battery life should not be a problem. However, if you are like me and you are planning to use the laptop at work or in college, you should have the loader at hand.

Pros and cons

So the Zephyrus M GU502GU is a pretty decent laptop, but it does not work well. Let's take a quick look at the good and the bad of this laptop.

Advantages:

  • Excellent design
  • Excellent performance
  • Good keyboard and trackpad

Cons:

  • Battery life Speaker quality is not good

Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU: Should I buy it?

The ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU is a pretty good laptop. It offers great performance within an elegant chassis, a good keyboard and a trackpad, along with a wide selection of ports and I / O options. However, at Rs. 1,49,990, the Zephyrus M is competing against the MSI GL63 9SEK laptop (Rs. 1,47,500) that brings the same 9th Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, a 1 TB HDD + 256 GB of SSD and 6 GB of RTX2060 graphics. The only place where the MSI GL63 9SEK is left behind is the weight: it weighs 300 grams.

The point is that, if you are looking for a gaming laptop in which high-end games are played, the MSI GL63 9SEK is a much better offer. However, if you are looking for a laptop that can handle games and adapt to your office, maybe go with the Zephyrus M GU502GU.
